@Overhaul build infrastructure:
- use automake to generate the Makefile.in
- style reorg in configure.ac
- ensure <openssl/sha.h> provides SHA256_CTX (openssl 0.9.8 or greater)
- move the "build helpers" to buildaux
- add a rudimentary (and not yet functional) test suite
